Barbecue judges wanted!
Plainview to hold Bluebell Barbecue Contest Saturday, May 8th!

Monday, March 29, 2010— The Plainview Bluebell Festival is hosting its first Barbecue Contest Saturday, May 8th at Wedgewood Park. All barbecue enthusiasts are invited to compete!  Trophies and cash prizes will be awarded for first place in each categories. Cash prizes will go to 2nd & 3rd place winners. Judges wanted!  Buy a raffle ticket from any Lions member for a chance to be a judge.

ENTRY FEE AND PRIZES

  • Categories: Chicken, Pork, Beef
  • $20 Entry Fee per Category. Contestants may enter one, two or all three categories.
  • All entry fees will be paid back as prizes.
  • Trophies will be awarded for top entries in each category. Prize money will be split: 50% for 1st, 35% for 2nd, and 15% for 3rd from entries in that category.

TEAMS

  • Every team must have a Captain, (contact person).

COMPETITION RULES

  • Contestants must provide enough samples for 25 judges. For example, Ribs must have 25 bones.
  • Teams will be assigned cooking space and they are responsible to keep it in an orderly fashion during the contest and clean at the conclusion.
  • No store bought pre-seasoned meats are allowed. All meat to be inspected before contest.
  • Wood, wood pellets, and charcoal are preferred heat sources but gas grills will be allowed this year.
  • If sauce is used, it must be applied to the meat before turning in samples for judging.
  • Cleanliness and proper food handling is required at all times during contest.
  • Teams are invited to make extras to sell to general public.
  • Please no loud music, excessive alcohol use, foul language. This is a family event that is open to public.

JUDGING

  • Blind sampling will be done with numbered containers provided by sponsors.
  • Judging will begin at 4:30 p.m. - Chicken; 4:45 p.m. - Beef and 5:00 p.m. - Pork
  • Judging will be on appearance, taste, and tenderness.
  • Samples more than 5 minutes late will be penalized.
  • Only judges and event representatives will be allowed in judging area.
